Hānai, a new nonprofit run restaurant, has opened at Peoria City Hall. Hānai is Hawaiian for “chosen family” and the café employs youth who are in transitional housing programs or have aged out of foster care. One hundred percent of Hānai’s proceeds go to their nonprofit called Friends of Ohana. Hānai trains and hires approximately 50 foster youth a year to give them job experience and responsibility in a work setting.
The menu includes beverages such as espresso, cold brew, teas, refreshers, frappes, and energy drinks. A variety of baked goods including muffins and danishes, acai, breakfast sandwiches, waffles with toppings, lunch sandwiches and wraps, and salads are also available. The café hours are Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
