In an initiative designed to ensure every student can attend school with confidence and dignity, Threadz, a free clothing and supplies initiative, is making a difference for teens in Tempe.

Open to middle and high school students residing in Tempe or enrolled in any school within the Tempe Union High School District, Tempe Elementary School District, Kyrene School District, or any Tempe-based school, including charter and private institutions, Threadz offers vital resources to those in need. To access these services, students are required to present a valid school ID.

Threadz operates clothes closets at three high schools: Mountain Pointe, Marcos de Niza, and Tempe High School. These facilities provide a wide array of new and gently used clothing, shoes, personal hygiene items, and school supplies, at no cost. The goal of Threadz is simple: ensure students have the essential items they need to attend school ready to learn.

The Threadz closet at Mountain Pointe High School, 4201 E. Knox Rd., Phoenix, is open on Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Marcos de Niza High School, 6000 S. Lakeshore Dr., Tempe, opens its doors to Threadz from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; while Tempe High School, 1730 S. Mill Ave., Tempe, runs its Threadz operation from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Notably, this community resource is powered by volunteers who offer their time and energy to staff the Threadz clothes closets, sort, and stock donated items. Volunteers help create a positive environment where students feel welcome, ensuring they can focus on their academic pursuits.

The organization welcomes anyone who wishes to contribute to their efforts, with opportunities ranging from a few hours sporadically to regular commitments of six to 12 hours monthly. Their needs are particularly pressing as Threadz relies entirely on volunteers to operate its sites.

Threadz invites those interested in supporting its mission to register as a volunteer via their volunteer management portal, Galaxy Digital. Through this portal, potential volunteers can explore all opportunities available with Threadz, and by registering, they can stay updated with the organization’s communication and news. Importantly, registering does not commit individuals to volunteer but does give a comprehensive view of how they can help support Threadz’s mission.

By ensuring every student has the necessary tools and clothing to attend school, Threadz is helping foster an environment where all students can thrive. Through their work, they are not only supporting the education of Tempe students but also fostering a sense of community and mutual support that extends far beyond the classroom walls.
